Chery Malaysia, more than a year after the initial announcement for its return, has officially launched the all-new 2023 Omoda 5 here.
With its modern design, intelligent technology, and comprehensive safety features, it offers a build with great attention to detail and functionality.
Locally-assembled (CKD) in Kulim, Kedah (Inokom), Chery’s new B-Segment SUV comes in two variants (Omoda 5 C - MYR 108,800, Omoda 5 H - MYR 118,800).
Prices (OTR, w/o insurance) include a seven-year/150,000 KM vehicle warranty, a five-year free service, and a 10-year/1,000,000 KM engine warranty (first 3,000 units).
Seven exterior colours. Khaki White, Dark Black, Phantom Grey, Dark Black with Red Stripe, Khaki White/Black with Red Stripe, Phantom Grey with Red Stripe (C) and Khaki White with Red Stripe (H).
Weighing in at 1,420 KG, the all-new Omoda 5 stands at 4,400 MM long, 1,830 MM wide, 1,588 MM tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 2,630 MM.
Angularly-chiselled and -athletic, exuding an overall sporty and modern outlook, it parades Chery’s ‘Art of Motion’ design language.
Aerodynamically-sculpted, the front-end features a wide and star-studded grille, which the outer edges where the framing would be, merges seamlessly with the bumper.
Paired to it is a stretched-out lower air-intake, and perfecting the whole layout are silver trimmings (top-grille, top-air-intake).
Differentiating the C and H variants are red highlights (front lower grille, side mirrors, lower doors, rear spoiler), featured exclusively on the latter.
The coupe-esque rear-end adds abundant to the whole sporty and modern appeal, with sharp contours adorning the view, primarily the middle of the tailgate.
Featured is a simple roof-edge spoiler, a rakish rear window with blacked-out rear pillars, and a pointed tailgate, of which underscores the Chery script in the middle.
Completing the outlook, the borderline bulging bumper is fitted with a large but neat-looking exhaust-integrated (silver-trimmed) black diffuser.
Differentiating the C and H variants are red highlights (front lower grille, side mirrors, lower doors, rear spoiler), featured exclusively on the latter.
Fiercely-framed at the lower edges of the bumper, the split headlamps are angular-looking, projecting an arrow-esque design. Fitted are full LED units.
Positioned at the top and linked with the grille are the slim and slit-like, T-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL).
Standard function is Headlamp Automatic Control (HMA). The H variant adds on sequential LED turning lights, welcome lights and animated start-up lights.
The tail lamps are housed in a full-width strip design (lightbar-style), very thin and angular with a wrapped-around arrow-esque edge.
Installed are full LED units, and like the front, the H variant gets sequential LED turning lights, welcome lights and animated start-up lights (‘Ceremonial Lighting Effect’).
The side mirrors are power-adjusted and -folded, with auto-dimming and heating functions, and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) indicators.
Fitted are ventilated disc brakes (front) and solid disc brakes (rear), accompanied by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Autohold system.
Sportily designed, fitted is a set of 18-Inch star-like-spoke alloy rims, wrapped in Giti Comfort F50 215/55 R18 tyres.
Standard, the finish comes in black for both variants. The H variant is differentiated by red highlights.
The all-new Omoda 5 has a modern and minimalist dashboard. A clean and airy layout, featuring premium quality materials, such as silver trims and soft-touch panels.
Headlining the black themed leather-wrapped dash is a twin-screen setup (20.50-Inch), and accentuating the ambience is a 64-colour ambient lighting.
Overall, the cockpit is well designed with all the buttons purposefully arranged, driver-centric, user-friendly, and stealthily-embedded in the trim.
One half of a twin setup, installed is a 10.25-Inch Dynamic Metre Cluster.
All-black, high-quality and comfortable. Interior of the five-seater is upholstered in faux leather/fabric combination (C) and full faux leather (H).
The driver seat features six-way power adjustments and ventilation functions (H), while the passenger seat gets manual adjustments. Rear seats (60:50 split-fold).
Courtesy of Chery’s TX1 platform, it offers plenty of interior mobility, meaning front and rear occupants get ample space.
It has numerous storage areas including large-sized door and seat back pockets, compartmentalised storage areas and a cavern storage space (cooling function) in the centre console, and a decent-sized glove box.
Mounted is a three-spoke flat-bottomed leather steering wheel, featuring multi-switches (Bluetooth, Media, Drive Mode), column adjustments (tilt, telescopic) and an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.
Provided are four cup holders, two located at the front and two at the rear. There are also four bottle holders, each located at the side door pockets.
Multiple power outlets available. E.g., three USB ports (two-front, one-rear), two 12-V sockets (one-front, one-trunk), and a wireless charger (front).
Accessing its powered-tailgate (C - remote control, H - hands-free) opens up to 360-Litres of boot space (1,075-Litres - rear seats folded).
The all-new Omoda 5 features the following suite of ADAS. Passive safety, standard for all variants includes six airbags (driver and passenger, front side, front and rear curtain), seatbelt (anchors, reminders, pre-tensioners), ISOFIX, parking sensors (four-front, six-rear), rear-view camera (dynamic guidelines), door ajar warning, emergency brake signal, and security alarm with anti-theft.
There are two drive modes. Eco, Sport.
Completing the twin setup, installed is a 10.25-Inch unit, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Intelligent Voice Assistant, USB and Bluetooth.
Entertainment is piped through a standard six-speaker setup (C), and an eight-speaker Sony Premium Audio setup (H).
The all-new Omoda 5 harbours a 1.5-Litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 156 HP/115-KW and 230 NM of torque.
Fitted is a nine-speed CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic transmission with electronic shifter (Tiptronic).
Power is transmitted to the front wheels. Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) system.
It has a fuel tank capacity of 51-Litres, and a fuel consumption of 6.9L/100 KM.
The all-new Omoda 5 comes with remote window operation, engine start with cooling activation, auto headlamps, rain sensing wipers, keyless entry with engine Start/Stop button, steering wheel (multi-function, tilt, telescopic), Intelligent Voice Assistant, wireless charger, automatic sunroof (H), powered-tailgate (C - remote control, H - hands-free), Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Autohold, auto-dimming rear-view mirrors (interior, exterior), front storage with cooling (centre console), dual-zone automatic air-conditioning (rear air-vents), PM 2.5 air-filter, power-adjusted and ventilated driver seat (H), interior lighting (ambient, map, cabin, boot), front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera (dynamic guidelines) and 360-degree camera.
There are air-conditioning vents located in the rear.
Installed is a setup of MacPherson independent suspension (front), and a twist beam independent suspension (rear).
It is comfortably spacious, safe and suitable for a daily driver. The ride quality is firm, agile and well-balanced, with a smooth engine power and transmission delivery.

The all-new 2023 Chery Omoda 5 is a great compact SUV. First, it offers a strikingly edgy exterior appeal, and great interior space.
