Overview

Summary

First there was the EQS 450+, then later came the EQS 500 4MATIC. Now, Malaysia welcomes the 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+.

The new all-electric high-performing saloon from Mercedes-AMG premiered alongside its other high-performing e-saloon, the AMG EQE. 

It underpins Mercedes’ Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA2) platform, and is blessed with the AMG Night Package (trims – black/black chrome).

Fully-imported (CBU), the sole variant (EQS 53 4MATIC+) hailing from Germany is priced from MYR 798,888 (on-the-road, without insurance).

Each purchase comes with a four-year/unlimited-mileage warranty, and a 10-year/250,000 KM EV battery warranty.


Exterior

Body Dimensions

Weighing in at 2,700 KG, the new EQS 53 4MATIC+ stands at 5,216 MM long, 1,926 MM wide, 1,512 MM tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 3,120 MM.


Front View

An overall rounded appeal, its ‘One-Bow’ design is projected in evenly-modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions, typical of the EQ styling cues.

The front-end features an AMG-exclusive black panel grille with metal-stamped vertical chrome struts, integrated Mercedes insignia and ‘AMG’ lettering.

Sportily accentuating the AMG A-wing front apron are the front splitter, air-intakes with flics and fins, and air curtains, all finished in high-gloss black paint and chrome trim.


Rear View

Matching the front, its rear-end further provides the dynamically sporty accent with smoothly-rounded contours and refined trimmings.

Featured is a body-coloured rear apron with an aerodynamically optimised diffuser (six longitudinal fins), and a body-coloured AMG spoiler lip mounted on the tailgate.

Overall, the rear is very athletically-defined, exuding a jointless design with a bumper that extends to the sides giving the body a muscular shoulder section.


Headlamps

Projecting an overall focused outlook, installed are Digital Light headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus. They are full LED units with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL). 


Tail Lamps

The tail lamps are also full LED units featuring a lightbar design. Futuristic-looking, the housing is slim, striking across the tailgate all the way to the sides.


Side Mirror

Power-adjusted and -folded, the side mirrors come with turn- and blind spot-indicators, as well as an automatic dimming function.

Brakes

It gets a setup of the AMG high-performance brakes, featuring red-coloured brake callipers (front - six-piston, 415 MM discs / rear - single-piston, 378 MM discs).

Optional, AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system with larger disc brakes (front - 440 MM).

Wheels

Surging on a set of 21-Inch AMG cross-spoke, matte black and high-sheen-finished light-alloy rims, wrapped in 275/40 R21 Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres.


Interior

Dashboard

Futuristically sporty, the new EQS 53 4MATIC+ has a high-tech cockpit, dominated by style-defining AMG features.

Paired with carbon fibre panels, cloaking the dash is a blend of MICROCUT microfibre and ARTICO man-made leather, themed in black or space grey.

Main attraction is the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen, dominating the entire layout spreading from A-pillar to A-pillar.

Fully protected by a single pane of scratch-resistant glass, it comprises three units (driver, central, passenger).

Other features equipped are metallised-finish, slim vent band and protruding-turbine-designed air-conditioning vents. 

Accentuating all these are AMG sports pedals, AMG floor mats and AMG door sill trims with ‘AMG’ lettering (illuminated with interchangeable cover).


Instrument Cluster

One third of the MBUX Hyperscreen, installed for the driver, is a 12.3-Inch digital multi-function setup with an augmented reality Heads-Up Display (HUD).

Seats

Furthering the AMG styling, fitted are AMG seats with AMG-exclusive graphics, blending MICROCUT microfibre and ARTICO man-made leather, themed in black or space grey.

Alternatively, seat upholstery in black or space grey Nappa AMG leather is also available with AMG-specific seat graphics.

Other details are AMG badges on the backrests of the front seats, and embossed AMG emblems in the front head restraints.

The front seats feature power adjustments, climate, massage and memory functions, and a four-way lumbar support. Rear seats get a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration.

Finishing the cabin’s overall outlook is a matching-coloured MICROCUT microfiber headliner, equipped with a panoramic sunroof (auto-tilt/slide).


Space

For an average-sized sedan, it is very comfortable with generous head, leg and shoulder rooms. Especially the front getting more leg room, courtesy of the floating-style centre console.

Steering Functions

Standard fitment is the AMG Performance steering wheel, in a three-rounded twin-spoke with a flat-bottom design, wrapped in Nappa leather and MICROCUT microfibre.

It has rounded AMG controls (multi-function buttons), aluminium paddle shifters, electric column adjustments (tilt, telescopic), and an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system (Rack and Pinion).


Storage Space

Several practical spaces available, like a centre console storage box and compartmentalised spaces, medium sized glove box, and seat back and side door pockets.

Cup Holders

There are four flex cup holders. Two located in the front centre console and two in the rear seating’s centre armrest.

Charging Ports

Equipped with the USB Package Plus, it features six USB-C ports placed around the cabin. It also has a Qi wireless charger and a 12-V socket.

Boot Space

Coming with the Easy-Pack tailgate feature (hands-free), the boot provides a contactless tailgate function that opens up to 610-Litres of loading space. The rear seats can be folded down using buttons on the boot lid for more space.

Active Safety

The new EQS 53 4MATIC+ features the following set of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). 

Under Driving Assistance Plus Package, grouped are Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, Extended Automatic Re-start in Traffic Jams, Evasive Manoeuvre Support, PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, Rear Sensors for Lane Departure Assistant, and URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection. Under Parking Package, included are 360-degree camera, Active Parking Assist, Pre-Installed Remote Parking Assist, and Memory Parking Assist.

Others include blind spot monitoring, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop and Go, and Lane Centring Assist with Level two semi-autonomous driving.

Passive Safety

Passive safety includes impact beams (side, front), 11 airbags (driver/passenger, front side, front/rear curtain, rear side, rear seat belt-bag), airbag disable function, ISOFIX, seat belts (reminder, pre-tensioner, anchor), door ajar warning, auto-dimming interior and exterior rear-view mirrors, Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus, parking sensors (6-front, 6-rear), PRE-SAFE system, TIREFIT, engine immobiliser, anti-theft alarm system, driver attention monitor with eye tracking, interior monitoring system, and Electronic Parking Brake (EPB).

Drive Modes

Drive modes available via DYNAMIC SELECT are Individual, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. Whereas, via Recuperative Braking are D+, D, D-, Gliding (Shift Pedals), DAuto, and Eco Assist (One-Pedal-Driving).

Infotainment

Completing the MBUX Hyperscreen setup, the infotainment sees a 17.7-Inch OLED centre touchscreen and another 12.3-Inch OLED passenger touchscreen.

It incorporates a fingerprint sensor, MBUX Navigation Premium, MBUX augmented reality navigation, extended MBUX functions, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wireless).


Driver Assistance

The Driving Assistance Plus package and the Parking Package will make driving less fatigue and much safer. 

Plus, with the other supporting systems, long-distance travels will be less of a burden for the driver as well as ensuring the safety of the occupants on board.

Sound System

Installed is a 15-speaker, 710-W Burmester 3D sound system. It supports the AMG Sound Experience Performance feature, accessible via the infotainment system.

Using special speakers, a bass actuator and sound generator, the sounds are tuned to the driving status and the selected drive program (Balanced, Sport, Powerful).

Performance

Engine

The new EQS 53 4MATIC+ harbours two electric motors (axle-mounted - front, rear), generating a total output of 658 HP and 950 NM of torque.

With the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package, boosted by the Race Start feature, the total power output increases to 761 HP and the torque up to 1,020 NM.

Transmission

It has a single-speed automatic transmission.

Drivetrain

Power is sent to all four wheels, via the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. 

Acceleration

It accelerates from 0 to 100 KM/H in 3.8 seconds (3.4 seconds - AMG Dynamic Plus Package), and has a 220 KM/H top speed (250 KM/H - Race Start).


Fuel Consumption

Juicing the e-motors is a 400-V Lithium-Ion battery with usable energy capacity of 108.4-KWH, providing up to 571 KM (WLTP) of driving range on a single charge.

Charging via AC (Type 2 connection) at 11-KW from a 10% to 100% state of charge (SoC) takes 11 hours and 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, charging via DC (CCS2 connection) at 200-KW from 10% to 80% SoC takes only 31 minutes.

Charging equipment consists of a five-metre charging cable (home-use wallbox, public charging station). Optionally available is a 22-KW AC charger.

Rear Air Vents

Ride comfortability feels flexible and firm at the same time, delivering high-power density and reliability. 

Featured is the AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with an adaptive damping system, AMG-specific carriers, suspension links, and anti-roll bars.

The setup is based on a multi-link with air suspension configuration. Overall, the drive has been tuned to provide complete stability and grip to the driver

Ride Comfort

It is well equipped to offer high levels of NVH comfort (Noise, Vibration, Harshness). Its electric drivetrain (eATS) features magnets that are arranged inside the rotors in an NVH-optimised way (known as sheet metal cut). Plus, it also has a special foam mat all-around as an NVH cover.
